Aprilis

close

my eyes.

Witness the light

diffuse in reddened lids.

For the world and time to pass

me by; I slouch in sighs, unscathed.

Silenced silhouettes surmise

the callous curtain’s woes.

Wraiths,all ghosts alike

Haunt the unlit room.

But I escape in

lullabies, asleep,

and wake

alone.

Lullabies, an older poem

Long regret has worn away
Half the sweet enchanting smile
I weave and place and cast away
The diaphanous ruse of mine

The string of memory sews the shreds

My ragged self, it comes alive.

There is so reason to betray
A vice unknown to wary climes.

I am but a weaver’s child,

A tapestry of brazen time.

Stars melt away and fall as snow.
Lose their incandescent glow

I find myself alone, again

Embraced in long-forgotten lies

Walking in endless circles,

As the path curves before me.

A hallway of sunken hopes:

It makes an eternal ring of rites

A curse I cannot yet undo.

Yearning wistfully of peace

I pull the muscles of my face

To an arch resembling amiability,

Before another blubbering fool.

People do what people can,

Yet I cannot stand a "how are you".

A tendril climbs to the sill

Of the window I intend to perch

I pace and pace and pace again

The flight of stairs I gauge unheard

There is an incessant refrain,

Playing at the back of my skull

I break a twig from the lowered boughs

Adorn my words with braids; entwined.

Author's Note

The word April comes from the Latin word, Aprilis, which means 'to open'. The said opening is in reference to the blossoming of flowers, a definite springtime joy.

While I regret the lack of blossoms in this particular piece,it was a way for me to be honest about what I felt this month, after a long writer's block, and it shaped itself as a kind of 'opening up' to the readers.
